Hi Paul! Well: to protect the lens you want a UV filter. The polarizer is just for occasional use; it also cuts down the incoming light by 2-3 stops (so 1/4 to 1/8 the light, meaning a slower shutter speed or wider aperture is required).

There's no possibility to get the effect afterwards in Photoshop. The polarizer blocks incoming light based on its polarization, and that information is lost when the light hits the sensor. :-/ You could apply a whole pile of color/levels/contrast tweaks to try and get the effect, but I still don't think it would be the same as using the filter.

Nice comparison there with the polarised filters. I'm not sold on getting one yet, beside the fact that the protect the lens itself. I guess you could do all these adjustments in photoshop too ?
